Courier Newspaper report 30 Sept / 2 Oct 2003
Local chess has taken a back seat this week with the Monarch Assurance plc 12th International Chess Tournament taking place at the Ocean Castle Hotel, Port Erin, from Saturday 27 September to Sunday 5 October 2003. Local players Keith Allen and Alan Ormsby are playing in the Open competition, where over 50 of the 105 entries are titled players. Keith had a good start, winning his first game with some fine combination play to win his opponents Queen. He lost his second game in a King/pawn ending and in round three was the star of the round, drawing with last year’s winner Grandmaster Vladimir Epishin.
The Major tournament, for players graded between 120 – 175, is taking place at the Erin Arts Centre, with Glenn Cross and John Griffin representing the Isle of Man in a strong field of 32 players.
In the Minor tournament taking place at the Cherry Orchard Hotel, 6 of the 17 players represent the Island. They are; Richard Mylrea, Alan Robertson, Graham Quayle (Douglas CC), Bob Talbot, Brian Keig, and Mike Ware (Southern CC). The Douglas and Southern clubs are contesting the £200 team prize and currently Southern CC lead by 3 points to 1½.
Play continues daily starting at 1.30pm Open (7 hour session) and 1.00pm Major & Minor (6 hour session). In the last Round on Sunday 5th October, play starts at 10.30am for all events. Spectators/Observers are welcome to attend at any of the venues.
The latest Game Scores, java windows, results and reports are posted on the official British Chess Magazine website as soon as games finish during the afternoon, from about 4pm GMT onwards. Links www.isleofmanchess.7p.com
The main sponsors for this event are Monarch Assurance plc, Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Port Erin Commissioners, with Manx Telecom and P.C. Solutions providing 5 internet linked computers for use of the players. Tournament Director Dennis Hemsley wishes to thank the sponsors and everyone else who has assisted him to make this annual event successful again. ZUGZWANG
Update 18 August 2003 - Dennis Hemsley reports that the Women’s World Champion Zhu Chen is unable to play, but Nigel Short who is ranked number 16 in the world, will be playing. There are 55 titled chess players playing, with Nigel Short the highest rated at 2701. Last year there were 26 titled players and 112 players in all, this year’s entry should well exceed this.
21st July 2003 - At the Isle of Man Chess Association AGM, Dennis Hemsley stated that there are 58 titled players in the Open this year, including the women's reigning world champion Xhu Chen. The top three players are also rated above 2,600.
He would like assistance this year by someone in the Isle of Man who could take an Arbiters test very soon and be able to Arbitrate in this year's tournament. He expects there to be three venues this year, the Ocean Castle for the Open, the Erin Arts Centre for the Minor, and the Cherry Orchard Hotel for the Major.
Important news for chess in the Isle of Man - In 2004, just after that year's Monarch, it is hoped to play the World Senior Team Championships at Port Erin.
Even bigger news - In 2005, the British Championships may be held in the Isle of Man.
Dennis is also looking for help in running future Monarch Tournaments. As he says, he is not getting any younger and would like someone to be able to take over the reigns as organiser in the near future.
