British Senior title for Gill  -  The Isle of Man Courier press report  -  23rd August 2001

Neville Gill has added the British Senior's chess championship to his Manx title in the Smith & Williamson sponsored chess festival at Scarborough.

The Senior's competition is restricted to players over 60 and this was the first year that Neville was eligible.  It is a remarkable achievement on his part, with his performance rating for the tournament running no less than 34 points above his BCF rating.

In a seven round Swiss competition he finished with a total of six points, one full point ahead of last year's champion, John Toothill and George Ellison, who is well known on the Isle of man as a regular participant in the Monarch Assurance Open.  Neville was unbeaten with five wins, including one over Toothill, and two draws, one with Ellison in the last round.

Immediately prior to the Senior's Neville had finished joint fourth in another tournament which he regarded as a pipe opener for the championship.  The wisdom of this was shown when he found himself playing better and better the more games he completed.  He was a bit taken aback initially when he discovered that nobody attempted to play positional chess.  It was all cut and thrust tactical manoeuvering from the first move on, while his style tends to lean towards the Nimzovitchian approach.

It is undoubtedly true that were Neville to play regularly against stronger opposition he would have a much higher profile in these islands than he enjoys at present.  However, after such a good beginning maybe it is time for him to think of playing across or further afield more often and financing his costly trips out of prize money.  Or is there a firm on the Island which would sponsor him for a year and then review the situation in the light of results and publicity?

White G Ellison (BCF 179) v Black N Gill (BCF 168)
Reti-Catalan  Over the years it is annoying how often I have had to meet this system!  It occurred twice at Scarborough, with J Lewin trying 5. Na3 instead of 5. Qa4+.

1. c4 e6  2. g3 d5  3. Bg2 Nf6  4. Nf3 dxc4  5. Qa4+ Nbd7  6. Qxc4 c5  7. Nc3 a6  8. a4 b5!  9. Qf4 b4

37. Kd3 Kc5      ½-½

(a) I thought that exchanging queens would draw easily but it was not as simple as that.
(b) When he played 28. d4 he was running short of time.
      After the game I suggested the plan e3, R4c2, g4 and h4.
(c)  I played 36 ...... g5 with a flourish; I had finally got there.

White N Gill (BCF 168) v Black I Smith (BCF 181)  (Ivor Smith was the 1999 champion)
Kings Indian  Playing my first game as sole leader and probably my last as White, this was the moment of truth!  To keep reminding myself, I used my Parker pen to record the moves.

1. d4 Nf6  2. Nf3 g6  3. c4 Bg7  4. Nc3 0-0  5. e4 d6  6. Be2 e5  7. 0-0 exd4  8. Nxd4 Re8  9. f3 c6
10. Kh1!(a) d5  11. cxd5 cxd5  12. Bg5! dxe4  13. fxe4 h6  14. Bxf6 Bxf6  15. Nd5 Be5  16. Qd2 Nc6
17. Nf3 Bg7  18. Qf4 g5(b)  19. Nxg5! hxg5  20.Qxf7+ Kh8 21. Nf6! Bxf6 22. Rxf6 Re6  23. Qh5+  1-0
At the end a plausible finish is 23 ....... Kg8  24. Qxg5+ Kh8  25. Qh6+ Kg8  26. Bc4

(a) The plan of Kh1, and Bg5 was played in a Spassky - Tal game in 1979 (I knew this but my opponent did not).  Black should play 10 ..... Nbd7 before lashing out with pawn moves.
(b) White was clearly better when Black played 18 ..... g5; Black missed 21. Nf6! in his calculations.

Guico Piano  Such complicated games!  It is the same every day.  In this tournament there is no "positional play" or at any rate very little.

(a) 6 ...... Na5! an excellent antidote to the Canal system (Canal was a Peruvian player in the 1920's).  Black gets weak pawns but 2 good Bishops.  I worked up an attack on his King.
(b) Instead of 28. Kb2 he should have tried 28. c4!  I had not seen a win and time was running short.
(c) If 30. c4 (instead of 30. Kc2) Black has d1(=N)+!!  It would have been my first promotion to a Knight, ever.
(d) 35 ......... Bb3+! mates after 36. Kc1 Ba3+ 37. Qb2 Qc2++

The defending champion plays the Slav and the Grunfeld.  I knew this, and prepared for the Grunfeld the previous evening.  I chose the 5. Bg5 system played by Karpov and Petrosan.  It was also played in the game P Kiriakov - Keith Allen in the Monarch.  White gets a rock solid position with excellent long term chances on the Q side.  To avoid this, Black played actively with 11...c5!? but there is always a danger that he will not recover the pawn.

(a) It is easy to criticise 26 ....... Bxh2? but Black was still a pawn down and White had the move e4 in some lines.

(a) After Black had played d4, White's key move was always going to be Na4 at some stage.
(b The critical position was after Qe2.  17....... f5 only weakened the e6 square.  17..... Ne3 is met by  18.Na4! Qg6  19. fxe3 Bxb2  20. Nxf7.  Therefore Black should have tried 17 ...... Nf6 with a playable game.

White J Farrand (BCF 187) v Black N Gill (BCF 168)
Veresov System  Over the years Julian Farrand has done a lot of original analysis on the opening  Here he came up with 9. Qe2!(a) which seems better than the "book" 9. Qd3 Qxd4  10. Bf2 Qxd3 which I have played for Black in a postal game.

(b) After the game we decided that neither side ever had any decisive advantage (although black had possibilities around move 21) and that the draw could have been agreed on move 30.
The game was actually adjourned but he offered me a draw immediately on resumption.  He deserves to be the number 2 seed.

Graham P Morris - aged 14
Although my opponent had defeated a player in round 1 with an estimated grade of 187, I had not noticed him play.  I was dumbstruck when I saw he was so young.  I do not like playing these people!  They move quickly and have endless confidence and stamina.
Players have the option of adjourning or playing on to a finish.  I found out that in round 2 Graham P Morris had played nearly 7 hours non-stop.  I made it quite clear that I would want to adjourn.

(a) Black overlooked my tactical shot 23. d6! (if 23 ........ exd6?  24 Nd5 wins) and got into a dreadful mess.
(b) White should have a clear win on move 36 but I did not see it and my clock was ticking.  By exchanging Queens I reasoned that I should be able to win a second pawn before the Rook at f8 got into play.  This is what happened.
(*¤¤*) What if Black plays Nxc5 ??

You cannot adjourn on move 41 before the end of the session unless you have used the full 2 hours on your clock, so we continued to move 49.  I had carefully set my watch and played 49. c6 just before "time" was called.  I thought that my opponent might seal the wrong move and make it easier for me to win.  (Black should have tried 49 ......... Ra7 and if 50. Nd4 then Nc7.)

(d) The rook ending lasts a long time but it is a certain win
for white.  All black can do is mark time.

After the game I met his mother.  I asked her why her son did not play in junior championships.  She said that he did not want to play with other juniors!  I took that to mean that he regards himself as better than most of them.  In the Veterans this is one "problem" I will not encounter.

36. Be2! Nxc7  37. Ba6          1-0     His finish was neat

White missed 17. Nd3!  I never had a safe square for my queen.
(a) Black could have held on with 25 .......... Bxf3  26. Bxf3 Qd7
(b) I overlooked that after 31. b5 Black cannot play 31 ........ cxb5 because of 32. Qb3+ Qf7  33.Bd5 (how obvious) but Black was lost by then!

Round       1

Neville is a seeded player but he does not know how high as the gradings have not yet been published.  His first game is shown below with some comments and exclamation marks by himself.  His first round opponent, J Flint, has an eleven year old daughter who is one of the leading British girl players.  She has been playing since the age of two!!!

29. Bxd2     1-0

(a) He should have played h6 earlier, forcing the bishop back to h4.  As the game went, white got a huge positional advantage.
(b) Rather than waiting to be squeezed, black gambles everything on an attack which was simply not sufficient.
(c) A killer move, taking one knight and attacking the other.
