Neville Gill needed a chess wheelbarrow
It was a case of Neville Gill needing a wheelbarrow to take away all the trophies he won at the annual presentation of prizes for the chess year gone by. In addition to the five competitions he triumphed in during the season he was also presented with the Holt trophy which was being retired after 25 years. Neville had won it for no less than 18 of those years.
He also became the first name to be inscribed on the Monarch Assurance PLC claret jug which replaces the Holt. His main achievement was, of course, winning the Isle of Man championship for which the handsome Patrick Taylor cup, instituted last year, was his reward.
His winning of two rapidplay competitions, the John Pearson and Vincent Watterson, together with the Manx blitz championship showed his dominance in accelerated as well classic time play.

Another player showing expertise in the quick game was John Costello who won the Manx
lightning championship and the Stephen Maggs cup for the blitz championship of the Douglas club. His strong performance during the year garnered him the Alan Robertson Driving School special prize.|

Alan Ormsby took home the Dennis Hemsley rapid play trophy or would have except that he left it behind when leaving. Did he, as suggested, have other things on his mind?!

The Stephen Maggs inter-club competition was won again by Douglas though they were successful only in the first leg of the contest, losing the second to the Southern Chess club. However, Douglas won on aggregate.
The final award by the Isle of Man Chess Association went to John Griffin who showed most improvement in competitions during the year, increasing his rating by 10 BCF points.
Southern club completed ten competitions last season with Francis Thoday triumphing in four. These were the club championship, for which he received the J B Ware shield, the lightning and blitz championships and the Stephen Maggs doubles open championship when he was partnered by Rushen High School student Sam Cadamy. The trophy for the blitz competition is the Thoday bowl in memory of Francis' mother.

The Courier cup went to Knock-out champion Frank Maher and the time handicap tournament was secured by Richard Sargent. Mike Ware won the rapidplay championship for the second time in succession while the Chairman's trophy, for players rated less than one hundred, went to John Hodgson.

Brian Keig, Frank Maher, Bob Talbot and Ian Thoday carried off the team tournament. Ian is Francis' father and returned to playing chess last September after a long lay off. Most improved club player was Dennis Hooper who is Chairman of both the Isle of Man Chess Association and the Southern Chess Club.

The Dennis Hemsley Table, now retired, was presented by Dennis to Jonathan Waugh, the last winner of the prize.
Dennis Hooper presided at the presentations and was ably assisted by Patrick Taylor, Managing Director Monarch Assurance Plc, Jean Maggs, Ian Thoday, Dennis Hemsley and Alan Robertson.
The evening was completed with a splendid buffet supper organised by the Cherry Orchard Hotel, Port Erin, where the Southern Club meets. Chess on the Island is indebted to the Cherry Orchard Hotel for all it has done to further the game over many years.
