Isle of Man Chess Association - Presentation of Prizes - Season 2002/2003

John Costello, Jonathan Waugh and Mike Ware major trophy winners.

John Costello, Glenn Cross, Jonathan Waugh and Neville Gill

At the Annual presentation of prizes for the chess season 2002/03, Neville Gill retained the Monarch Assurance Plc Claret Jug in final style, being undefeated throughout the tournament.  This was the first major competition held, and due to a change in work commitments, this was Neville’s only victory of the season.

In the other Isle of Man Chess Association competitions, John Costello came to the fore, winning the Blitz Championship, the Lightning Championship and being a joint winner of the John Pearson Rapidplay competition along with Jonathan Waugh.

John Costello’s final triumph was being a joint winner of the Manx Championship Patrick Taylor Cup, along with Jonathan Waugh and Glenn Cross.  For all three players, this was their first Manx Championship win, and we shall have to see what happens next year if Neville Gill is able to play!

Jonathan Waugh won the newly instituted Handicap Trophy and the Dennis Hemsley Rapidplay competition, for which he received the excellent hand carved chess design trophy.

Francis Thoday retained the J B Ware Shield for The Southern Club Championship winning all 5 games played.  He also won the Lightning Cup and was a joint winner of the Doubles open Championship Stephen Maggs Memorial Cup along with Jamie Wright, Brian Keig and Juan Watterson.

Mike Ware did not attend the prizegiving, so Richard Sargent filled his car with Mike’s trophies to hand on later.  Mike had a good season winning the Courier Cup for the Knockout, being a joint winner of the Rapidplay with Richard, and also taking the cup for the Southern Clubs most improved player of the year.  Mike also made a big impression in IoM Chess Association games winning the Plate for most improved player and the Alan Robertson Driving School special prize for outstanding performance.

Other Southern Club trophies presented were the Chairman’s Trophy, John Hodgson (again); Handicap Cup, Juan Watterson; and the Blitz Championship Thoday Bowl, Richard Sargent.

The Stephen Maggs inter-club competition between the Douglas and Southern clubs was again won by the Douglas Club, the final score 9-3.

Dennis Hooper presided at the presentations, assisted by Francis Thoday with Jean Maggs and Alan Robertson making special presentations.  Before the prize-giving, an excellent buffet was laid on by the Falcon’s Nest Hotel, Port Erin, the new venue of the Southern Chess Club.
